Support for lawyers
What has changed
Attorneys, barristers, notaries and law firms remain supervised by the Financial Intelligence Unit, and the list of legal activities that trigger the duties is unchanged. What changes under Act No. 3 of 2026 is the toolkit around them.
Customer information orders now reach the profession
Where information is material to an investigation, a Judge must order a lawyer to produce customer information.
Privilege
The wording of the Act does not address legal professional privilege. How an order interacts with it is a question for the Bar and Mauritius counsel.
Suspension orders
A suspicious transaction can be held for up to 72 hours, with no disclosure of the order to the client.
Existing clients and owners
Due diligence applies to every current business relationship, under the wider beneficial owner test.
How JasperX helps
We carry out the client due diligence and screening and return a file with our recommendation. We do not give legal advice, and the legal responsibility stays with you.
This is for information only and is not legal advice. Check when each provision takes effect.
